Echo Lake Aquarium and Science Center

Our adventure to Fort Ticonderoga with the grandchildren was such a success, we decided to take them on one more before the seasons change too drastically. This time we made a trip to Burlington, Vermont to the Echo Lake Aquarium and Science Center http://www.echovermont.org/index.html.

The Aquarium and Science Center is located  at the Leahy Center for Lake Champlain which sits on the waterfront. It is an absolutely beautiful location, and the Leahy Center building has windows all around the front where you can look out at the lake. It is a breathtaking view and hard to walk away from, but the kids wanted to see the fish, frogs, snakes and more.

There are many things for them to see and interact with, and they ran from one thing to the next with anticipation. So fun to watch their reactions to the different frogs and snakes. One of their favorite things in the entire center was the kinetic sand in the 3D Watershed Sandbox. Although the interactive piece of this exhibit was not working, the kids loved the sand. It felt very different in your hands and did not stick like the wet sand at the beach. It was hard to get them to leave the area and move on to other things. Our youngest was very taken with the tank with all the big fish, and kept going back to sit in front of it and watch them. The souvenir they all decided on was a small leather pouch that they could fill to the top with the many different rocks available to choose from. We stayed long enough for them to see each exhibit, but knew when it was time to move on and let them run outside for a bit.

It was a beautiful day in Burlington and we walked up to Church Street to have some lunch. Church Street is a unique and fun place, and the kids were able to sit for a bit and watch a musician play his guitar and sing. We found a place where we could sit outside for lunch and watch the pedestrians walking along the street which is closed off to traffic.

After lunch we walked back to the car which allowed them to burn off the rest of their energy before we all piled back into the car for the ride home. I'm not sure who was more exhausted from our busy day, but I do know that they had more energy left than we did as we listened to their chatter all the way home.

So....Echo Lake Aquarium & Science Center was the last adventure for this year, but I know over the long winter months we will be thinking about where we can take them next. I do know that we are ready for the long rest to recharge for what comes next.
