At The Worst Possible Moment

When they say things seem to happen at the absolute worst moment they are correct. I recently found this out with events in my own life.

I was in Las Vegas helping my sister with a trade show this past week. On my last night there I called home to check in with my boyfriend as I had done each night. He told me at that time if I were home he would have me take him to the hospital. When I inquired as to why he began describing symptoms of a heart attack, so I asked how long he had been having these symptoms and he told me 2 hours! I told him to call our neighbor and go to the hospital. He is as stubborn as most men and said he did not want to bother the neighbor, and he could walk it off. Needless to say I got off the phone with him and called his twin brother who had a heart attack 7 years ago. I knew he might listen to him, and he did. Of course between the two of them they did not call an ambulance, but instead he decided to drive himself to the hospital - having a heart attack.

Fortunately he made it there, and they took him in immediately, informed him he was indeed having a heart attack, and took him up to put a stint in one artery and a balloon in the other. He did minimal damage to his heart and will lead a full life with some changes to diet and lifestyle. He is a lucky man and I thank God for that.

There is nothing worse than being so far away and knowing there is nothing you can do to help someone you love. Coming home seemed to take forever, but being able to see him and know he was in good hands eased the worry. I know that if he were to have this happen again he would not wait so long to go, and I would make sure that he called an ambulance and did not drive himself.

I do know that we all need to have a plan in place for times like these, and most of us do not. We need to have these discussions so we can be prepared. Time is so crucial - a quick response is needed.

Please - have these conversations with your family and loved ones. Do not wait for something to happen at the worst possible moment, and not have a plan.
