We Do Have Some Control

We have all watched the news media sensationalizing the cost of living today. It seems as if they are trying to create havoc and fear. Although the price of the things we purchase have risen, the truth is we do have some control over how it effects our budget.

We need to remember that the pandemic played a large role in the exorbitant increases we have seen on everyday items. The shortages that were created during this time allowed companies to charge much higher prices for what little was produced compared to normal manufacturing quantities. Plus, those who were out purchasing more than they needed and hoarding it also contributed to higher prices.

If we listen to all the gloom and doom on our evening news, we will believe there is nothing we can do to ease the strain on our daily cost of living. The truth is, we do have some control on how we spend our money and how to save on everyday items.

First of all, I am no different than millions of other people. There have been many times in my life that money was very tight, and choices had to be made on where to spend what I did have. We all have to decide what our priorities are and spend accordingly. We also did not spend our money on things considered luxuries if we did not have the basic necessities.

One place we can have an impact on our budget is planning what we will put on the family dinner table. We all have "extras" we like to have, but these are usually impulse buys which will quickly increase the weekly food bill. If we take the time to make a menu, and then prepare our grocery list from that menu, it will decrease what we spend. Check the stores weekly specials, use as many coupons as you can, and plan meals around what is on sale. If you are shopping and find that something you wanted for your meal is priced too high, be prepared to adjust accordingly and buy something less expensive.

When it comes to family outings or vacations, look for special offers at local venues, or visit state parks, or amusement parks appropriate for your children. Going to your local state parks for a family hike and a picnic can be great fun for everyone. And, a day at the beach is an inexpensive family day that is a special treat for many. Good times do not have to break the bank.

The bottom line, we do have some control over what how we let the cost of things effect our budget. If we take control of how we spend our money, we can send a message to the manufacturers. If we refuse to pay the higher prices and they do not sell the product, we can have an impact on what they charge. Lower demand, lower cost. Just a thought.
