Easter

Easter - for some it signals the beginning of spring. For others it brings visions of the Easter bunny, Easter eggs and candy. Although it's wonderful to share the fairy tale of the Easter bunny and carry on traditions like coloring eggs and the egg hunt, we also should teach our children the true meaning of Easter.

It can sometimes be more difficult to teach the meaning of Easter than a holiday like Christmas. It is easy for children to understand that Christmas is the day we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Teaching them about the resurrection of Christ is not as simple for them to grasp. So, below I have tried to put in simple terms the true meaning of Easter.

Easter is the day we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus (when he rose from the grave). No man had taken his life. He had given it freely for us - to restore our fellowship with God. He had been crucified and was buried for three days. All his disciples had believed that he was gone for good.  He had told the religious leaders and his disciples that He would give His life and on the third day rise from the grave.

The religious authorities had remembered His words and tried to prevent it by putting a large stone in front of the tomb, a Roman seal and guards. But none of that prevented God’s plan for that first Easter.

Luke 24:1-8

On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: ‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’” Then they remembered his words.

So, there it is in simple terms for you to use, if you choose, to share with your children. May you all have a wonderful Easter celebrating your family traditions.
