It Doesn't Get Better Than This
Over the past month I have been blessed to have time with all three of my grandchildren. There is nothing better than having the joy and laughter of children in the house. It can be exhausting, but it is also uplifting and nourishing for the soul. It reminds you what life is all about.
In July my two granddaughters came for four days. We decided to have them come together this year as the youngest is still a bit apprehensive about coming by herself. She usually is fine once she is here and settled, but it really did work out well with the two of them here at the same time. Even though they are cousins, they are much like sisters, so they did have a few moments here and there of bickering. We took them to the ocean to play in the waves, and then they swam in the lake for hours playing with the neighbor's children. One day we went out to have hot fudge sundaes for lunch (grandmothers can get away with things like that), and went out on the boat so they could "drive". We bought some carrots and then went to see the animals at The Fairy Farm which is always lots of fun. I believe they love my friend Theresa as much as they love the animals.
The last several days my grandson was here. He is now 14 and getting so grown up, but still loves his time with Grammie and Nanu. He's at an age where he is very easy to have around, and he also has quite a sense of humor. He really enjoys his time alone with Nanu, and at times the two of them are like mischievous adolescents. Hard to tell which one is over 60 and which one is 14. I took him to breakfast and then he had his day at the beach. He rode bikes and played in the lake with the other kids. I took him out to lunch and to get a new out fit for school, but since he is a boy he wanted nothing to do with trying on too many clothes. He did end up with some shirts, a belt, and a nice driving cap. Guess he will be ready when he is able to drive. We did take him out on the boat and he tried tubing. Overall he did well, but the tube we have is not the easiest to hold on to. Next year he will be stronger. The big treat was a ride on the motorcycle with Nanu.
I have always said that I want my grandchildren to know me. Not just to say "this is my grandmother", but to really know who I am. To know what I like and dislike, how I feel about life, and to impart the knowledge and wisdom I have gained over the years on their youthful minds. I give them my unconditional love and let them know that they can always count on me. These special moments making memories and bonding are priceless. As long as they will come, I will welcome them with open arms. I may not always be able to keep up, but I can have fun watching.
