The Rules Apply To All
It seems that too many people today feel that the rules and laws in place apply to everyone but them. I don't know what possesses them to think that they can do whatever they want and not have to pay any consequences, but if they see someone else breaking a rule or law they are quick to say they should be punished.
We wonder why we have a generation of children growing up who think that they can say whatever they are thinking, or do what they want without thinking about whether it is right or even legal. All you have to do is look around at the adults they are watching and you have your answer. Whether it is in the workplace, in stores, or on the highways, people are doing what they want without taking into consideration the people around them. If it means that they get what they want or get where they want to be faster, they don't care if they break a rule or law. I guess if they are not caught or nobody holds them accountable, then the behavior will continue; perpetuating the same behavior in children.
Today we see a magnification of this behavior. We all have a right to protest peacefully if we abide by the laws, but people fueled by hate are protesting by causing damage to property, or even worse harm to others who do not agree with them. We cannot accept this behavior from anyone unless we are willing to turn into a lawless society. They need to be held accountable and we need to show that they will be punished if they do not follow the law.
Nobody is special, exempt, or above all others when it comes to abiding by the laws and rules. We all are important in our communities, and have a responsibility to ensure a safe and lawful environment. If we take a stand and say that we will not accept the selfish, unruly and/or illegal behavior, then perhaps our children, and their children, will live in a better world where there is respect for one another.
