Enjoying Time While They Are Still Young

I just returned home from taking my youngest granddaughter back to her mother. She is the youngest of the three grandchildren, and the last to have her time with Grammie and Nanu. She only stayed two nights as she is a bit apprehensive about coming by herself. Each grandchild has their own unique personality, but one thing they have in common is a strong will. They think that if they talk at you long enough they will get exactly what they want. Of course they have found this doesn't necessarily work with us. When you don't have them on a daily basis it takes much longer for them to wear us down. Unfortunate for them. However, we always have a very good time with each of them, and I feel blessed that they want to come every summer.

Anthony will be 13 tomorrow, and although he still has some young boy left in him, I can also see a glimpse of the young man he will be in a very short time. He likes going to the ocean with us, driving the boat with Nanu, and if he can talk us into it, mini golf and go karts. Now that he is a bit older he enjoys hanging out with the other young boys in our neighborhood, and not so much with us. I'm ok with that as long as he still wants to come. Before we know it he will be driving, working, and won't have time to be here.

Emily is now 8 and is Anthony's sister. She is very bright and has a beautiful smile. Like most young girls she loves to talk and do girly things. When she comes over there is a day at the beach and a boat ride. If time allows I take her for a pedicure, and then she will spend time playing with the kids who are around on the weekends. Even though she is the baby of her family, she is the middle child of the three grandchildren. I have always said that at times she is very much the middle child who feels the oldest and youngest get more attention. It is up to me to make sure she gets the attention she deserves. Everyone needs needs time to shine.

Then there is Natalie, the baby and cousin to Anthony and Emily. Natalie is almost 6, going on 30. She has always been wise beyond her years, as if she lived a life before this one. Being the youngest she knows how to get the attention she wants. Natalie has a great sense of humor and wit, and can make you laugh even when you shouldn't. She "LOVES" the ocean and will go even when it's not a perfect beach day. She is a mix of princess and tomboy, and loves jumping on her trampoline as much as getting a pedicure.

We are exhausted by the time they leave, but I wouldn't give up a moment of our time with them. I hope that we are giving them something that will stay with them as they grow into teens and adults.

These times may not last forever, but the memories will.
