Eventually the Thoughts Gather
As I sit on our back deck in the shade on this late summer afternoon, I contemplate what is on my mind today. My thoughts are almost as relaxed a I am at the end of this busy day, which makes it difficult to delve into my creative side.
When I was out earlier today I noticed that the local high school was already back in session, and the elementary school will start their school year in two days. It seems like it was a few short weeks ago that the school year ended and they ran out the door excited for the days ahead. I'm sure the kids were not ready for this so soon.
Looking at my garden with the tomato plants starting to dwindle and other vegetables gone by, I realize this season is coming to an end. I am both sad to see it go and happy about the beautiful fall days ahead. Time for picking apples for fresh apple pies and many other wonderful things to bake. Filling the house with delicious aromas that bring back childhood memories. Sometimes these memories make you wish you could go back to the simple carefree days when you did not have the worries of adulthood. Our children think we are too old to remember, but in time they will realize we never forget these precious times in our lives.
The lake which has been so busy is all of a sudden quiet. No kids swimming or out on the docks during the week; the water calm and patiently waiting for the weekends. The boats are still in the water, and will get more use before summer ends, but for now they sit bobbing in the water like toys.
If you close your eyes you can feel the change; you can smell it in the air and feel it in the slightly cooler breeze. So very different from the hot summer days that we have enjoyed and will be leaving behind.
These are the things that are on my mind today. Remembering the summer fun and looking forward to the great fall days to come. The cycle continues with new memories to be made and treasured.
