Dinner from a Box? No Thank You!

I have seen more and more commercials on television selling meals in a box - delivered to your door. All of the fresh ingredients needed, with instructions, to prepare a meal for your family. Although I am in favor of feeding your family a home cooked meal, I am sure this is not a cost effective way to do so. These companies are making money and you are paying too much. Plus, how fresh can it be after it is shipped in a box?

Growing up we were taught hot to cook; how to read a recipe, measure ingredients, and put things together for a nice meal. It was part of being a family and something everyone should know how to do. With all the pre-packaged foods and fast food restaurants, the home cooked meal has gone by the wayside; and also sitting down to dinner as a family.

Every child should be taught how to prepare a meal. Not just the cooking part of it, but also how to get to the point of cooking. We should show them how to prepare a menu for the week, and how to put together a grocery list from that menu. If they know how to read a recipe then they will know what ingredients will be needed. After bringing home the food, they will also need to know how it should be stored to remain fresh until it is needed for a meal.

If you take the time to teach them when they are young then good eating habits will follow them into adulthood. Start off with easy recipes; my all-time favorite cookbook with fool proof recipes is Betty Crocker. I have had mine for over thirty years. It has been used so much it is falling apart, but I know that whatever recipe I use will always turn out great.

I know my grandchildren like to help in the kitchen. It can be a bit chaotic teaching them, but they are always proud of their creations; even if it is just helping to make a salad. As they get older and learn to prepare an entire meal, they will be a big help and feel important within the family. Who knows? Maybe you will inspire the next great chef!

Take the time to ensure they know what a fresh meal is, and how to prepare it. Fresh meals should not arrive at your door in a box.
