Family, Villa San Nicola, and Ortona

After our time in Tuscany, we looked forward to spending time with cousins in Villa San Nicola. What can I say about Villa San Nicola? A quaint old Italian village that still has a few cobblestone streets and is away from the hustle and bustle of cities. The minute it comes into sight, you exhale, and it feels like you have arrived home.

We were filled with excitement and anticipation about spending time with cousins we had not seen for five years. The warmth and love they give wraps around you like a big hug. Their family has grown since our last visit, and they now have three grandchildren with another on the way. Needless to say, they are very busy with their expanded family.

Since their house was full, we stayed in the old home that he remembered from his childhood. He and his brother used to stay there when they visited Italy with their mother. One of his cousins from Rome has an apartment in the house and offered it to us for our visit. It has an old world feel and was very comfortable, plus it was just a short walk down a dirt lane to his cousin's home.

We spent a few days here that were filled with fun. There was lunch with his cousin by the Adriatic Sea in Ortona, and a few dinners at the family table filled with great food and laughter, making memories and reminiscing with stories from years ago. An evening out with his cousin and his wife for a quiet dinner with great food and company. He also was able to visit with a woman that knew his mother and the boys when they were young. I have no doubt it brought back many memories for him.

Although the language barrier can be difficult at times, I do understand some of the conversations by picking up a few words here and there. For the most part, I am very content listening to the words swirling around me, getting caught up in the sound of this musical romance language. It can take you away to a different place and time.

Leaving Villa San Nicola can be difficult. Not only because there never seems to be enough time to spend with family, but also it has a way of pulling you back. It makes your heart feel like you are leaving home.
