Let the Festivities Begin

It does not seem possible that another year has passed; yet here we are once again at the beginning of another Christmas season.

Thanksgiving had not even arrived before the holiday advertisements appeared on television. The big push to convince consumers they need the latest gadget or fashions, the dreaded commercial aspect of the holidays.

However, this is not what the Christmas season is all about. It means so much more, and if we open our hearts and minds, we will receive the best gift of all, the spirit of Christmas.

As children it was easy to get caught up in the magic and excitement of what was to come. Watching holiday classics on television, indulging in Christmas cookies and candies, writing letters to Santa, and waiting with anticipation to see what Santa would leave under the tree. It seemed like Christmas day would never arrive.

As we grew up and became teens, we lost much of the Christmas magic we never doubted as young children. We did enjoy our time with family, but it was more about the gifts under the tree. Did we get that big item we were hoping for? Inevitably we were sure to get clothing; although needed it certainly did not stir up feelings of excitement.

When we finally had our own children, Christmas had a whole new meaning. Watching them with their eyes filled with amazement and awe at the magic of Christmas filled our hearts with such love and joy. As they squealed and laughed with excitement when they opened gifts from Santa, we were brought back to the days when our hearts were filled with the same magical feelings.

Next came grandchildren, and we once again embraced Christmas, living vicariously through our children as they watched with joy at the excitement of Christmas morning. The circle of life reminding us of what the season is all about. If only we could stay in these moments forever.

However, as we age life changes, and what once was is not necessarily what we will experience again. Some of us have lost loved ones, and other family members are spread far and wide making large gatherings much more difficult. What we wouldn't give to be able to recreate one of those big family Christmases.

Having said that, there are so many ways we can still experience a joyful and fulfilling Christmas season. Volunteering at a food bank, donating gifts to a toy drive, playing secret Santa to help out a friend, or gathering neighbors and friends for Christmas caroling. Each one will leave us feeling in the spirit of the season.

And, if we cannot have a big family gathering, we can have a Christmas gathering with friends. The generosity, kindness, and love of our friendships will surround us with the Christmas spirit that our heart desires. A full heart that will bring much happiness to the season.

So... let the festivities begin.
