How We Define Beauty
Beauty is defined as a combination of qualities present in a person that pleases the senses. Many people interpret this as referring to only a person’s outward appearance, however, beauty is so much more than this.
When we are young, we are attracted to someone based on their appearance. We tend to be more visual than cerebral as teenagers and young adults, and do not go beyond what we can see. Women with soft features, long flowing hair and a slender figure draw the attention of young men; while thick hair, rugged features and a muscular body on men will attract young women.
As we age and become more mature, we begin to realize that there is much more to beauty than what is on the outside. Even if our initial reaction is based on how someone looks, we are more open to taking the time to get to know who they are on the inside.
What makes a person beautiful has more to do with their character and personality. If someone is honest, kind, and compassionate we are drawn to them, and want to spend time getting to know them. They may be soft spoken and easy going or have a great sense of humor with a contagious laugh. There are storytellers, nurturers, healers, protectors, providers and so much more. Each one becomes an important part of another's life.
The quirky smile, the soft touch or kind heart draws us in, and that person becomes our partner, lover or friend; so important that we cannot imagine life without them. Even if someone else cannot see their beauty, that is the only thing we can see.
As we age time may not be as kind to us as we would like, and we may only see the lines on our face or the extra weight around our middle. However, the ones who love us still see all the wonderful things that drew them to us in the beginning. In their eyes we have not aged but are still the same person they fell in love with as they got to know our inner beauty.
Be as kind to yourself as you are to the ones that you love...remember, your heart will always see the inner beauty.
