The Calm After the Chaos

Christmas and New Year's Eve have come and gone, and once all the trees and decorations have been taken down, we will be left with empty spaces and open calendars.

Although the holidays are filled with family, friends and fun, there is something to be said for the emptiness once they are over. It gives us the opportunity to reflect and recharge after all the chaos; a chance to ascertain how we see the New Year ahead.

We may have already set goals for 2020, but there is no rush to set these in motion. Jumping in too early, when we are still worn down from the festivities, will most likely set us up for failure in our attempt to achieve them. Looking at the month of January as a time to rejuvenate and breathe new life into our sails will be just the thing to foster success.

Use this time to relax and do activities that are low key; read a book, watch movies that you have had on your list, or meet a friend for coffee. Do things that bring you a sense of calm and relieve the stress that may have built up over the last two months.

Have fun with your children sledding or ice skating.  Laugh with them to show that life doesn't always have to be serious, and that a healthy life includes leisure activities. Take a long weekend with your spouse/partner and go to a place you have been talking about; rekindle the romance.

The weeks of eating sweet treats and rich foods, along with being on the go constantly, can make us feel as if we are moving in slow motion. Sometimes getting back to a normal routine and regular eating habits will jump start the recouping process. Resetting our sleep pattern and refraining from the holiday treats is certainly good for our bodies, and eventually our energy levels begin to rise.

The winter months will be difficult and long so we will need all the energy we can get. If we push forward without down time to recharge, the new year will drain us as much as the holiday festivities.

We need to think of January as the month to refresh our minds and refuel our bodies. Once we regain the proper balance, we will be able to achieve our 2020 goals with ease.

So, the mantra for January is "relax and recharge"; repeat every time you feel the urge to move ahead too soon.
