Our Sad Obsession with the Rich and Famous
I am completely perplexed when I see how obsessed people are with someone rich and famous; whether it's movie stars, sports figures, millionaires or someone in a powerful position, there are those who spend far too much time following them. They are voyeurs watching through tabloids or social media, as if every move made is of great importance.
So many who are the object of this voyeurism encourage it. They engage via social media (Facebook, Twitter or Instagram) and are constantly checking to see how many followers they have. As if this alone makes them far more famous or important than they were yesterday. Such fragile egos that always need stroking. In many ways I feel sorry for them.
However, I have even more sympathy for the ones who don't believe that their own lives are as important as someone famous. They couldn't be more wrong. They are someone's mother, father, daughter, son, grandchild, aunt, uncle, grandparent or friend, and being any one of these is very important to someone in their life. If they want to be obsessed with a life, it should be the one they are living every day.
Every moment wasted on following the rich and famous could be time spent with your family or friends; playing a game with your children, having dinner with your spouse, visiting with your parents, meeting a good friend for lunch and so much more. Use the time to find a tranquil place to take in the peace and beauty of nature. Go for a walk, read a book, take a cooking class, go see a play - engage in your own life.
The rich and famous seem to have a more interesting life filled with whatever they may want, but the truth is, many of them are not happy. All the money in the world doesn't buy happiness, and their life can be a very solitary one; never knowing if someone wants to be with you, or your fame and money. It's the people close to you, your family and friends, that will make your life happy and complete.
Do you really care what someone rich or famous is doing today? Ask yourself, " is it more important than my own life?" Whatever they are doing certainly won't enhance or change your day.
If you want to be obsessed over someone's life, be obsessed with your own. You just might be surprised how important and famous you are.
