Cherish Family and Friends
In a few short weeks I will once again be celebrating the day I was born; another year passing in the blink of an eye. However, my inner struggle between acceptance and denial over the number of years I have experienced is something to contemplate another day.
Today my thoughts are focused on the relationships that have been established over a lifetime. So many people who have helped to shape who I have become; some still a part of my life and others who have come and gone. A few lost to age or illness, and then the ones who came into my life for a reason and departed like a ship in the night. We all have these people in our lives.
Parents, siblings, children, grandchildren - our family. Each one of them is an integral part of our life. Our parents provide us with love and safety; along the way teaching us right from wrong. Their ultimate goal is to help us become the best person that we can be. Our siblings - as children we tend to argue with them; sometimes out of jealousy, or perhaps to get them in trouble with our parents. The disagreements change over time to tolerance for one another, then indifference, and eventually for most, to a bond that can't be broken. Our children and grandchildren open our hearts giving us the greatest gift; knowing unconditional love.
The strangers who come into our life who may eventually become friends. Sometimes we grow close, and other times remain just friendly acquaintances. We have something in common with them for a brief period; perhaps a purpose that is to be fulfilled. In time we drift apart and go in different directions.
Then there are the people we meet who become lifelong friends. People we connect with and forge a permanent bond that cannot be shattered. Although there are times we drift apart due to life changes, we will always come back together as if no time has passed at all. These friends will always be there for us during good and bad times; never judging and always standing with us when needed.
We must cherish every one of these people who touch our lives; things can change in a heartbeat. As each year passes, I realize more and more just how precious these relationships are.
