The Changing Roles in a Woman's Life

As women we have many different roles that we play throughout our lives. What that role is depends on not only our age, but by the circumstances we encounter.

As a young girl our role is fairly simple. We learn to be part of the family team, meet other children, play, treat others with kindness, and try to do what is right. We may hit some obstacles along the way, but our responsibility is small.

When we reach the teen years our role changes and responsibility increases. We are expected to help at home, get good grades, be a good friend, and contribute in the community. If we don't do the right things, our parents will soon know. This time in our lives is more difficult as we meet expectations, and try to find how we fit into the world.

Then we become mothers, aunts and role models to the children in our lives. We nurture, teach, discipline and show them the path they should follow. Making sure they understand the responsibility of helping those less fortunate. Encouraging them to become good citizens within their community. Teaching them the things they will need to know to become the next generation to fill this role.

Eventually the children grow up and start families of their own. For a time they still frequently need us, and we talk often; guiding and giving advice when needed. Then the time comes when they are busy teaching their children, and it's time for us to step back. Our role and responsibility decreases, and we fill our lives with things we have longed to do for years.

Our last role comes as our parents begin to age. We watch as the years go by, and realize that we now worry about them, as they worried about us as we were growing up. Even when they are active and their health is good, we know that all of that can change quickly with age. We cherish each day as we know how precious they are.

This role we hang on to until the day comes that we are the aging parent. Then our children will be watching, worrying and checking in on us. And so the pattern goes from one generation to another.
