Summer Fun with Anthony
We are very lucky to have three grandchildren that we get to spend time alone with. It's nice when they come with their parents, but better for us if the parents are not here. Any grandparent will understand what I mean by this.
We have had Anthony for the past four days - he is almost 11 and a very busy young man. I do see changes over the past year and know that he is no longer the little boy we welcomed into the world over a decade ago. And even though he is moving quickly to the teen years, I am fortunate that he will still come and give me a big hug from time to time.
On Friday Anthony went out fishing on the boat with Nanu and caught a fish. He enjoyed telling me the story of how the jaw ripped off the fish when he tried to take the hook out. Even though he felt bad about this it is a story he will be able to share for days to come. That evening we took him to the race track in Loudon to visit friends who were there for the big Nascar race weekend. We enjoyed dinner and then took him for a walk around to see the sights. A qualifying event just ended so we were able to go into the stands and look at the track and some of the cars. As you can imagine this was an "awesome" thing for him to see. Unfortunately I did not have my camera so no photos of the track for him to take home.
Saturday was our adventure to the coast. We visited the Seacoast Science Center at Odiorne Point State Park in Rye http://www.seacoastsciencecenter.org/. It is an absolutely beautiful spot on the ocean! Anthony was able to learn a bit about the sea life of the area and have some hands on at the touch tank. From there we went into Portsmouth to tour the USS Albacore - the first submarine of the Navy http://ussalbacore.org/. He had a great time touring the sub, playing at the controls, and seeing how cramped the quarters were. I can't imagine having to spend much time in that confined space. On to a cookout with friends and home for some much needed rest.
Sunday and today are easy days at home on the lake. He spent many hours playing in the lake with other kids yesterday and I'm sure he will squeeze in as many hours as possible today before his return home. The time passes by far too quickly, but these priceless moments will give him memories to last a lifetime.
Next adventure.....a fall trip with all three grandchildren. Guess I better rest up for that!
