Sacrifice

Sacrifice (verb): to give up something you want in order to help someone else.

Whether it is a relationship with our husband or wife, children, family, partner or friends, there comes a time where we all need to make sacrifices. When their needs become more important than our own, and we know that the only thing we can do is put our desires aside and make sure that someone else is taken care of. This is how we show our love for those close to us and let them know how precious they are.

Sometimes the other person has no connection to us at all. We see their struggle and know they are suffering. At this moment our compassion for another human is so overwhelming that we know all we can do is sacrifice to try and ease their burden. Even if we don't have a lot to give, there is always something we can do to help. This form of sacrifice is what we need to teach our children. To ensure they know they are part of a larger community with a responsibility to help others less fortunate, and that they should do so without looking for recognition for what they do. If they learn this early in life they will come to know how good it feels to do for others.

The last several years have been difficult financial times for many. It has become increasingly more challenging to find a way to help others when many do not have much themselves. However it does not have to take a large amount of money to do good things. Spend time helping out at a food bank or soup kitchen. Make Christmas cards to send to service men and women who are giving the ultimate sacrifice every day. Spend time with someone that you know may be alone most of the time. The sacrifice of a small amount of your time can change some one's day.

Sacrifice - giving up something we want to help someone else. Take a look around as you go about your day, and you will soon see where you can make a difference. It may be at home or it may be for a stranger. I know that in the end we find it is not a sacrifice at all - it just becomes a part of who we are and we do it naturally.
