Rules of the Road for Bad Drivers

Anyone driving on a daily basis can tell you that it seems people have lost their minds behind the wheel. Everyone is either in a hurry to go nowhere, talking or texting on their phone, or just unwilling to follow the rules of the road and be courteous drivers.

Traveling on the roads anytime is stressful, but even more so as we head into nicer weather and people are out more. Everyone in such a hurry to get to a destination they don't see the irony that they may not arrive unless they slow down.

When I am out doing my usual weekly errands, I am unsure if I will return home in one piece. You certainly need to have eyes not only in front of you, but in back and to the sides to ensure you can find an escape route in case someone is approaching too fast or swerving out of their lane.

In view of this I have come up with a few rules of the road for bad drivers:

  1. If you are not able talk and concentrate on your driving...PULL OFF THE ROAD TO TALK ON YOUR PHONE.
  2. If you do not have a hands-free device...PULL OFF THE ROAD TO TALK ON YOUR PHONE.
  3. I don't care how talented you think you are - nobody can drive, and type or read at the same time.
  4.  If you want to send a text or read a text...PULL OF THE ROAD.
  5. If you are preparing to take a left-hand turn, put on your blinker, and if there is a left-hand turn lane, USE IT.
  6. If you are so close to the car in front of you that it appears you may drive over them.... SLOW DOWN.
  7. If you are merging onto, or coming off the highway, do as the sign says and YIELD. That means yield and not speed up to cut someone off who is already in the traveling lane.
  8. If the car in the passing lane is going above the speed limit to pass a car in the traveling lane give them time to pass...DON'T FLASH YOUR HEADLIGHTS OR TRY TO PUSH THEM just because you want to travel at warp speed.
  9. If you are driving at an excessive speed because you are trying to get somewhere on time...PLAN AHEAD AND LEAVE EARLIER.
  10. If you don't know where you are going...PULL OVER AND FIGURE IT OUT.
  11. If your GPS has you confused to the point of making you almost stop in the middle of the highway...PULL OVER UNTIL YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT IT IS TRYING TO TELL YOU.
  12. If you think you can put on makeup or comb your hair while driving...YOU CAN'T.
  13. If your children are requiring your undivided attention - PULL OFF THE ROAD to take care of them.
  14. Although the new vehicles provide us with the ability to use our technology while driving, it is not necessarily safe to do so.

And to end with a bit of humor....

  1. If you think you can dip your chicken nuggets or fries and watch the road...JUST ASK THE DRIVER OF THE CAR YOU REAR ENDED.
Having said all that, I hope that everyone follows the rules of the road and arrives safely at their destination.
