Fika

I recently became aware of the Swedish word fika and the definition struck a chord with my soul. Such a small, simple word that carries a truly life changing meaning if we take the time to let it sink in.

In many European countries they have mastered the art of taking time to enjoy their personal lives. Employers do not require them to work over and above a normal workday, and are generous not only with pay, but also with time for holidays (what we would call vacation). According to Eurostat, in 2021 average hourly labor costs in the whole economy were estimated to be €29.1 ($30.96) in the European Union (EU) and €32.8 ($34.89) in the euro areaEuropean Union legislation mandates that all 27 member states must by law grant all employees a minimum of 4 weeks of paid vacation. Workers are entitled to 10 days paid annual leave for each complete year of service. Every employee is also entitled to 12 paid public holidays.

And then there is the United States. As we all know, our wages pale in comparison to many other countries around the world. When it comes to vacation time, we do not fare much better. Too many employers expect employees to work overtime on a regular basis, and when it comes to taking vacation time, many are hard pressed to get one week off at a time. This is not enough for anyone to be able to unwind and become refreshed. The United States needs to do better for its citizens.

With this in mind, we all need to take control of our lives to ensure we are the best version of ourselves. Our families and friends speak more to what our lives are about than any position we hold at work. If we cannot enjoy what is good in our lives, if we cannot welcome a beautiful day and what nature has to offer, if we cannot give our families and friends the best part of us, then what is it all for?

Yes, we all need to work to support our families, but it should not be at such a high cost. We should have the time and opportunity to enjoy the good things in our lives without sacrificing our souls.

So, be sure to allow for fika in your life.
