The Path Less Taken

These last several weeks I have felt the urge to travel solo on back country roads to seek some peace and solitude. There is nothing better for the soul than to escape the everyday chaos and take yourself to another time, even if only in your imagination. With that in mind, I once again share this blog from several years ago that brings me back to one of those days.

"I shall be telling this with a sigh -
Somewhere ages and ages hence;
Two roads diverged in a wood,
and I - I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference."
~ Robert Frost ~

In the last few weeks, I have traveled to the southern NH/MA border several times, been to Andover, MA, and most recently to Boston, MA. Being on the highways with such a high volume of traffic can be a bit overwhelming and stressful. It's no wonder people feel exhausted if they are dealing with this on a daily basis. Not something I have any desire to do.

Today when I headed out, I decided to take a more peaceful route. Going down the quiet, winding back roads at a more leisurely pace was much less stressful, and therapeutic. Driving past corn fields filled with their dry and yellowed stubs from last year's crop; waiting to be plowed and seeded for the new season. Houses from earlier times still strong and sturdy providing a home for another family. I can't help but wonder what stories these houses had from the many years they have been standing.

Old barns - some still in use filled with cows; others falling into disrepair. Wondering what took place for some of these to be left empty and at the mercy of the elements and time. Did the family fall on hard times, or did it just become impossible to make a living running a farm?

This quiet time with my thoughts makes me imagine traveling back to an earlier era. When travel was done only on quiet country roads, and people were not in such a rush. More time was spent with family. Kids played games like Kick the Can, Red Light-Green Light, and Red Rover outside, or board games inside.

These quiet rides seem to end far too quickly bringing me back to reality. It may not be the "real" world of every day, but letting my imagination take me to more peaceful times is something I enjoy more as each year passes. Perhaps the solution is to make more time to travel the path less taken to rejuvenate the soul.
