The Struggles of a Type A Person

Depending on the day, having a type A personality can be a blessing or a curse. If you happen to be a type A you know what I mean. In your mind you are running through the endless tasks ahead each day. I need to make the bed, feed the cat, go to work, prepare dinner, do the dishes, make lunches, and the list goes on.

Being a type A person has its perks. They're always organized and on top of things, and make sure that everything gets done. Not only do they make sure their own tasks are completed, but they will do everyone else's too. They can't help themselves, it's like they are being driven by an invisible force. Because of their desire to have everything a certain way, it keeps the home and work environment neat, clean and efficient.

There are also many downsides to having a type A personality. If they do something once it eventually becomes a habit, and then is something they must do every day. An unknown power they can't control compels them, and if they don't complete the task, they will feel that something is out of order. Eventually they can drive themselves, and everyone around them a little bit crazy. Not everyone has a desire to be so particular about how things look all the time, but the type A can't help themselves. It's a struggle for them to let go and relax; their mind is like a spinning wheel that can't stop. Once something has been completed, they have already moved on to the next chore on the list. To them there is always something more they can do; nothing is ever totally finished in their world. Just one more thing and then the day will be done; but even when they go to bed, they feel the day is not done.

Type A's find it extremely difficult to be spontaneous; to leave things behind and run off on an adventure. If it isn't planned they feel out of control. Even if they have the desire to let things go, as they look out on a beautiful day their mind tells them to stay on task. If they don't do it who will? It never occurs to them that there is a more calm and relaxed way to go through life.

From one type A to another, I can tell you that with age things do calm down some. You will find that all those things you so desperately feel the need to do will wait for another day. Take a breath and enjoy life; nobody will notice if you don't have a spotless house. However, you will notice how much fun life can be.
