Special Time with Our Grandchildren

Every summer each of our grandchildren get to have their own weekend with Grammie and Nanu. They feel special, and we get to spend time giving them individual attention which allows us to strengthen our bond. I have always said since each of them were born that I want to make sure they know who we are and that they are loved.

Over the last three months they have all had their weekend. The girls were very specific with their requests. They both wanted to go to Hampton Beach and for a ride on the boat. We were fortunate that on both of the girls visits the weather was perfect for a trip to the beach. I had great fun standing in the water and watching them run in and out of the waves. The joy of seeing them have so much fun is very good for my soul, and it makes my heart smile. Nanu sits on the beach with his cigar and supervises. He might dip a toe into the water to test the temperature and occasionally take a picture or two.

When we take them out for a boat ride they always want him to go as fast as possible. They sit in the bow of the boat and tell him, "faster Nanu, faster!" After a bit he will stop the boat and let them throw a line in the water to see if they can catch a fish. They don't last long - no patience for the sport. So we head out and they get to drive the boat for a few minutes.

Our grandson is now 12 so has different interests in some ways. He still wants to go out on the boat, but when they stop to fish he stays with it longer and they give each other a hard time. When he takes over to drive the boat he takes it very seriously and looks like a natural behind the wheel. Definitely all boy, or should I say young man. The little boy look is fading quickly as he turns into a young man.

His special treat was to go to  a place nearby called Chucksters. They have several different attractions to choose from which are great fun. We played mini golf and then he went on the Jumpster (jumping on an inflated mat with bungee lines harnessed to him). The last event they did were the Go Karts. They lucked out and had the track to themselves so they had great fun racing each other. Not sure who was the bigger kid.

I always take lots of pictures, and then put together a small photo album for each of them. My grandson has quite a collection after all these years, and the girls are adding to theirs each year. Memories for them to have forever.

There is one other time of year that we take all three of them for an overnight excursion. In another few weeks we will pick them up and take them to the Six Flags Great Escape Lodge and Indoor Water Park. I figure that we better get rested up for this event. I'm sure I will in the water more than I have been all summer, and will be exhausted when we take them home. As long as they have a great time we are happy.

Precious memories....worth more than gold.
