What Life is All About

Life has thrown me a few curves recently and it would be easy to let it get to me, but in the end that would not change a thing. And just when I am at the point of letting things get me down, I am reminded of what life is truly about.

This past weekend my nephew received his "White Coat" as he entered the University of New England's Pharmacy Program. My sister and brother-in-law rented a cottage for the weekend at Old Orchard Beach, Maine and invited family to help celebrate this occasion. We had already planned to have our 3 grandchildren so we brought them along for the day.

The cottage was at Waves Oceanfront Resort and it could not have been a more beautiful early fall weekend. In fact it was unseasonably warm at around 80 degrees. Even though the ocean was cool, it did not keep my grandchildren from running in and out with the waves. So much fun to watch them laughing and screaming as the waves chase them to shore.

Once they (or should I say we) had our fill of the cool ocean water, we took them to the heated pool. We watched them play and splash around, and let them dangle their feet in the hot tub. They were in the pool for more than two hours until their fingers were like prunes. I'm sure they would have stayed all afternoon if we had not taken them out to visit with family.

The rest of the afternoon was spent on the porch eating great food, visiting with family and new acquaintances, and watching the kids tumble in the sand. Every opportunity they could get, they would walk down to the beach with anyone who ventured there. Of course when they came back on one occasion their clothes had "accidentally" gotten wet. Fortunately I had a change of clothing for them. They had a blast - the time of their lives. My youngest granddaughter said she would tell her mother they had to move there. After dinner it was time to head home, and they all fell asleep one by one on the ride. Exhausted and full of great food and memories.

This is what life is all about. Time with our family, telling stories and laughing, making memories to take with us. My grandchildren will remember these times, and we will ensure they have many more as the years go by. So when life throws a curve or two, I will remind myself of what truly matters, and how lucky and blessed I am.
