Better with My Feet On the Ground

After yesterday I can honestly say that I will never be the adventurous one who sails around the world. This woman does best with her feet planted on solid ground.

We were invited by our very good friends to spend the day with them on their sailboat. We would be going out for about 4 hours or so along the coast of Massachusetts and New Hampshire. I had only been sailing on the ocean one other time in my life. It was a sunset cruise on the Cape during my honeymoon. That was very many years ago and it was quite a cool evening so we were all covered up with blankets. An incredible sunset made for an amazing evening. I never did feel sea sick on that outing so did not think I would have any trouble this time.

It was an absolutely beautiful day to be out on the water. Sunny and a nice breeze blowing making for just the right temperature. We headed out of the channel and out into the open waters of the ocean. Then the sail was opened up and filled with the wind, and we were off on a calm and peaceful journey. There is something to be said for no humming from an engine and only hearing the sound of the wind as you sail along. It is calming and exhilarating at the same time. Once on our way we had lunch, conversation and a few laughs. Could not ask for a nicer day.

And then things started to change. The euphoric feeling I had soon changed to feeling nauseous. Unlike my boyfriend I had not taken the Dramamine as I thought I would be fine. Not so lucky - I held on for quite some time thinking I could get by until we were back. Unfortunately I could not and before I knew it I was hanging over the side losing lunch. The rest of the trip was spent sitting as still as I could with my eyes closed thinking the feeling would go away. Again I was wrong - until we were back the nausea did not disappear. Funny how quickly it leaves once you are on firm ground again. Even though this day did not turn out the way I had hoped I will definitely give it another try next summer.

My boyfriend had a great day - sailing, lunch, a beer and a cigar. He could not have been happier. Although he was reminded of how much work sailing can be. As enjoyable as it is there is much work to smooth sailing. The joy of the sport does not come without having knowledge and skill.

As for me....I do love living on the lake. My soul is at peace each morning as I look out and see the flow of the water, but I am definitely more connected to the earth. My feet planted on the ground, my hands working in the flower bed or garden, truly places me in my natural element.
