Our Journey to Plimoth Plantation

I have been fortunate to have my 9 year old grandson with me for the last several days. He is a very busy young man who keeps me on my toes, but we do have fun together.

Yesterday Nanu, Anthony and I took a journey down to Plimoth Plantation in Plymouth, MA. The day started out a bit gray as we left NH, but by the time we arrived in Plymouth the sun was shining and it was a gorgeous day! We had a nice lunch at the Water Street Café before we started our tour at the plantation.

We walked along the dirt path to the Wampanoag Homesite where we learned how they lived back in 1600's. There were Native Americans weaving bags by hand, another burning embers slowly inside a tree to hollow it out for a boat. There was a winter hut where stories were being told, and the summer hut for viewing. So many things to learn of how they worked the land, and made clothing out of deer hides.

Walking further along the dirt path we arrived at the 17th century English Village. Along the street there were many houses with thatched roofs - most of them consisting of just one room. Inside there would be a cooking pot in a corner over a fire, a table, and a raised bed. All of these houses had dirt floors. The towns people told stories of how they came to this country, and how they worked together to make sure they had enough food, clothing and shelter.

The final stop was at the craft center where they had many areas set up. Each one showing how things such as clothing, furniture, dishes and pots, and woven bags were made during that time period. Everything made by hand.

I hope that my grandson learned a lot, and that this trip will be one that he will remember for many years to come. As I do with all of our little adventures, I put together a small photo album for him to look at and share with his sister and cousins. They too will have their turn with Grammie and Nanu as they get older. So much fun for us to look forward to.
