It's Not My Fault - Lawyers and Lawsuits

So many in our society have come to believe that nothing is their fault, and because of this belief  lawyers are getting rich. They will find a way for you to blame someone else for the choices you have made in life. That is not to say there are not companies and individuals out there who take advantage or make decisions that will cause harm - and they should be held accountable for this.

However, so many of the cases brought into court are nothing more than someone looking for a pay day after making a choice they had to know was not a good one. And lawyers are getting rich encouraging this behavior. If you watch any television at all then you have seen the many commercials where an attorney (or an attorney spokesperson) tell you they can help you get the money you deserve. Of course they try to make it sound like they only want to help you and don't say how much they will make off the lawsuit if they win. I call them the ambulance chasers.

Maybe I am showing my age, but I was always taught that I am responsible for my own decisions. If I decide to do something that I know may not be a good choice, then I am the one who has to pay the consequences. I do not blame someone else for my poor decision, or expect them to pay me.

In my mind this all started when the courts awarded a woman money because she was burned by hot coffee - she was not warned it was hot. Really??? Coffee is hot and we all know this. People say they do not want to be told what to do or how to live their lives, but every time we allow these things to happen we give more power away. We also encourage lawyers to go out and look for more frivolous lawsuits from which they can get rich.

As long as we continue on this path we will end up paying more and more for everything we purchase. When these lawsuits incur a huge payout the companies effected pass the cost on to the consumer. It is a vicious cycle and one that I hope can be broken. We as a society need to be responsible for our actions and stop blaming someone else every time we make a poor choice.

I know many of us did our part by teaching our children to be responsible for their actions. They are passing this same message on to their children, who will pass it on to their children and so on. If we all do this then eventually we may see this as an expectation in society. Taking responsibility - as it should be.
