It's Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas

Thanksgiving has come and gone which hardly seems possible - until the Christmas commercials started. They seemed to sneak up on us and I am sure they were slipped in a week before we enjoyed our Thanksgiving meal. We should be allowed to give thanks for all the wonderful people in our lives before we think about shopping. Don't get me wrong - I like to shop and give to others, but like to wait for one holiday to end before I go there.

Having said all that, I did get my Christmas decorations out this past weekend and carefully placed everything in its proper place. Funny how we know exactly where they should go even after a year in storage. As I go through the day putting up the tree and decorating with lights, bulbs, special ornaments, and garland I think of what this holiday is truly about. It is about time with my family sharing memories and making new ones. Seeing the joy on the faces of my grandchildren as they open each package with such excitement. The simplest of gifts are just as wonderful as bigger items. Sometimes the smallest of things will give them hours of pleasure. Enjoying sweet treats that we only get on these special holidays.

One other tradition for me and my daughters is our own small, special "tree". The few years that I could not afford a real tree, we decorated our little tree (plant) that had a few sparse stems with leaves. The plant has grown over the years, but still is far too small to be considered a tree. However, each year I put it in the window and decorate it the best I can as we cannot truly have Christmas without it. As I decorate this I remember how much fun we had with our little tree and know it has never been about what we have, but who we are with.

Even our cat, Murphy loves Christmas - he can't wait to sleep under the trees where he thinks he is hiding.

So...I will savor the moments over the next several weeks and remember what Christmas means to me, and will enjoy every moment I can get with family and friends.
