Silence

 Si·lence [ˈsīləns] - NOUN - quietness · quiet · quietude · still · stillness · hush · tranquility ·

Silence is not easy to find today. We are constantly bombarded with noise at home, work or out in public. At home even if we are not watching we will have the television on with the constant noise in the background, or a radio playing. If we aren't listening to these things we will be looking at the computer and perhaps watching videos. At work there may be other people talking around us, or even machinery running depending on where we work. When out in public there will be noise from traffic, chatter all around in a restaurant or even in the stores we frequent.

Noise can lead to high blood pressure, anxiety and stress, and has a marked physical effect on the brain. It's no wonder we may feel we are losing our minds some days. We never have an escape from the constant din swirling around us.
As a society we are starved for silence and solitude. Some may not even know this and are not aware of the health benefits for the body and mind. Studies have shown the following health benefits of silence:
    1. Improves your memory - walking in nature can help the brain focus and have better memory consolidation.
    2. Stimulates brain growth - sitting in silence can boost brain growth by creating new cells.
    3. Relives stress - even a few moments of silence reduce stress levels.
    4. Fights insomnia - spending time in silence each day can lead to improved sleep.
Other benefits of silence can include:
    1. Boosting your immune system.
    2. Making you feel happier.
    3. Make you look and feel younger.
    4. Reduce pain.
    5. Help regulate your hormones.
No matter how busy our schedules can be, we all need at least a few minutes a day to sit in silence. Whether it is in bed before you get up in the morning, or just sitting in your car with nobody around. If you take the time to do this, you will be amazed how much better you will feel in a very short time. What a great boost to our health both physically and mentally; and who knows, maybe we will look younger too.
