Step Forward
I recently heard someone give advice that really struck a chord. He said, “When you reach the end of your comfort zone step forward”. Such profound meaning in just a few words.
How many times have we yearned to try something new or wanted
to make changes in our lives, only to be held back by our own fears or
discomfort? The fear of the unknown, or that which makes us uneasy, can leave
us frozen and unable to make changes that may just lead to better things.
There are some who easily welcome change and new challenges.
If they have any fears it is not apparent to those around them. How we envy
these risk takers who so easily abandon what holds some of us back. What is in
their nature that keeps them from staying in their comfort zone? Perhaps they
were born with it, or maybe they learned from their parents.
When faced with our fears, we need to ask ourselves what is
holding us back. Most of us have the desire to do more. We may want to see the
world to explore other cultures, or take a shot at learning something new that
will change the course of our lives. We have the desire, but that nagging bit
of fear can stop us in our tracks.
What is the worst that will happen if we take the chance? If
we don’t like where we end up or it doesn’t work out as planned, we can always
go back to our home base. It is not irreversible, and we can always go home
knowing we gave it a shot. Plus, we will have the opportunity to meet some amazing people along our
journey that will enrich our lives.
If we cannot break the chains of fear that hold us back in
our earlier years, it becomes even more difficult as we age. Even if we
recognize that we should have taken more risks that may have opened up a whole
new world, or gone on those adventures we dreamed of, it is likely we will
spend the rest of our lives where we have always been.
Some of the biggest risks result in the greatest rewards.
The chances we take not only make us stronger, but we gain much wisdom on the journey to share
with those around us.
So…when you reach the end of your comfort zone, step
forward. You never know where that one step forward will lead you. It might
just be the greatest adventure of your life.
