Music and Memories

While traveling to see my mother we decided to listen to a mixed CD that was given to us several years ago. Hearing the first few notes of the very first song opened the floodgate of memories. It is amazing how music can transport us back in time to places and people we may not have thought about in years. As I listened my mind brought forth events that took place from my early teens to adulthood.

My very first concert was at the Providence Civic Center (more years ago than I care to remember). We saw Aerosmith in their early years with Argent (Hold Your Head Up) as the opening act. So many others followed. There was a trip to Burlington, VT to see Van Morrison with three friends from high school; a night that I will never forget for many reasons.

Some were memorable for the incredible talent of the artists; Bonnie Raitt performing at the base of Stowe Mountain in Vermont with Lyle Lovett as her opening act. Her voice going from her well-known raspy rock to sounding like an angel. Bette Midler in her Kiss My Brass tour; not only is she an amazing singer, but she is funny and a true entertainer. Others I was fortunate to see included Rod Stewart, Carrie Underwood, James Taylor, Jason Aldean, Thomas Rhett, and Marty Stuart.

The highlight for me was when we went to see Tina Turner in Boston in 2000. That is a night I will never forget! Her performance was unbelievable; her energy level contagious, and it was a night that we did not want to end. I will forever be a fan of Tina.

Songs from our past can bring forth many emotions. Some will make us smile as we remember our first love, while others can make the tears flow as we think of those we may have lost. There are the songs that make us feel young again; setting in motion the desire to dance the night away. We are never too old to feel the music and let it flow out from our body. There is great such freedom in giving in to this.

Today reminded me that we should listen to music more often. The memories they bring forth are good for us; they soften the tough days, and the melodies can soothe our soul.

Music is a great healer and equalizer. It can bring us together, and these days we can use all of that we can get. So... turn on the music and sing and dance often.
