And Another Season Begins
Seems like only a few short days ago that we welcomed summer with such joy after a long hard winter and cold spring. Ready for all the fun activities on the lake and at the ocean; so many days ahead to enjoy the heat of the sun on our cold weary bodies. Even though we think that we never want those hot summer days to end, we always seem to be ready for a change when they do.
So here we are again entering fall; my favorite time of year with the warm sunny days and cool nights. A time when open windows allow the fresh crisp air to flow through and clear out the staleness from a long hot summer with a closed home and A/C running. Nights of sound and restful sleep as we snuggle under covers with the cool night air.
The leaves will soon be changing to show off their brilliant colors. The apples are ready for delicious homemade pies and fall flowers will begin to grace the door steps on many homes. With the cooler days we will start to prepare our comfort foods that have been set aside during the hot summer days. What we had tired of at the end of winter, will be welcomed on our table in the months ahead.
Although I will revel in the magnificent beauty of this season, there is a sadness to some of what I will no longer enjoy. My Hummingbirds have already taken leave of the backyard to make their long journey to warmer climates, and the birdbath that has been such an active gathering place all summer is now almost vacant. Although a few hard-working honey bees still visit the last blossoms of the season, they will soon lay dormant; while the chipmunks who have provided humor with their play are scurrying around to prepare for what's to come.
Most of all I will miss my Loons. As we get closer to the inevitable arrival of winter, I hear their haunting call less and less. It fills my soul with a sadness as I prepare for the loss of these friends during the long dark days of the season. The closed windows and silence tend to be stifling.
For now, I will embrace fall and take joy in every moment. I look forward to the fashion show of the trees and walks on a cool sunny day. Baking apple and pumpkin pies, filling the house with the aroma of love that goes into preparing each one. Watching as children rake leaves and jump into the pile just like we did at their age; so much fun in such a simple thing.
So Mother Nature, I welcome fall with open arms. Show us the spectacular beauty you have to offer this year.
