You Want Me To Watch What?!
Although there are many movies that can be enjoyed by both men and women, our differences become apparent when we try to find one to watch together.
Recently he asked me to watch a movie that a friend had given to him. I was hesitant because this friend has recommended some real winners in the past. They tend to be filled with senseless violence and weak story lines. One of them was so bad, that when it ended we looked at each other and burst into laughter.
Well, he had watched part of this particular movie, and assured me it was pretty good and had some humor. I figured I would trust his judgement and give it a shot. Once again I was bombarded with non-stop violence, odd characters, and a weak plot that jumped all over the place. There was some humor, but not enough to save the movie. All I could say at the end was "that was an hour and a half of my life I will never get back", which he did find amusing.
Don't get me wrong, I have no problem watching movies with some violence as long as there is a good story behind it. However, violence for the sake of violence is unnecessary. Men tend to like movies that are the shoot 'em up, constant action with characters performing unrealistic feats, and borderline good guys taking down the bad. They do like humor, but mostly adolescent humor.
Women have a tendency to like more cerebral movies with deep story lines such as psychological thrillers, true stories, or a well told tear jerker. We do like humor, but prefer more adult, clever humor. And who doesn't love a movie with a handsome hero that saves the day?
Fortunately, most of the time we agree on movies we would like to see. A few that we recommend are Spotlight, The Post, Chappaquiddick, Shutter Island, Something's Gotta Give, City of Angels, Captain Corelli's Mandolin, The Bucket List, Gran Torino, Million Dollar Baby, Con Air, As Good as It Gets, National Treasure, and Blood Diamonds. Of course there are too many to list them all.
Whatever movies are on your list of must sees, make sure you set aside time to relax and enjoy!
