Clearing Out the Closet - Clearing out Your Mind
In the chaos of a very busy summer, it seems that things get a bit scattered and out of place. Never enough time to keep the usual organization in the home. With this disarray all around us our thoughts become clouded and difficult to keep in focus.
As we near the end of summer, I find that I am in great need of gathering up the whirlwind of thoughts spinning around in my brain, and bringing focus back into my life. One of the best things for me to achieve this is to start cleaning out the forgotten spaces in our home. So many neglected areas that it comes down to choosing one to start with.
Yesterday I decided that I needed to make that choice and pick one project to complete. If I could do that, then I knew clearer thoughts would follow. I openly admit that my walk-in closet does become a space that collects far too many things in a years time, and was one of the biggest projects that needed to be tackled other than the kitchen cabinets; but that is easily a two day project that I am not quite ready for.
It always amazes me how many things I can collect over a year, and how many things I left hanging in the closet the last time that I still have not worn. I'm not sure what the attachment is to some clothing or shoes that makes it so difficult to part with them. I pondered that question as I delved into this undertaking and perhaps have found a bit of insight into this. Some things definitely remind me of the younger years in my life which conjure up precious memories. Other pieces of clothing bring comfort as they are worn. The reality is, no matter what reasons I had for holding onto them, I have not worn many of them in more years than I care to remember, and really should no longer be wearing them. Let's be realistic here - things that are that old don't look as great as we remember, and will never fit like they should. We are kidding ourselves if we aren't willing to admit that our bodies change as we age.
It took several hours as I sorted through and tried things on, but with each one that I put aside to give away (or throw away) it felt as if more and more weight was being lifted. As the heaviness of all the things fell away, my energy level was elevated and my mind became clearer. Leaving me with positive thoughts and plans to move forward in my quest to clear out more spaces. Best of all, I have a large bag filled with things to share with someone who can use them.
