We are experiencing a service interruption in your area......
If you’re reading this, then they
finally got our cable and internet back up and running. Our service went out at
7 last night, and what we were hoping would be a short interruption ended up
lasting almost 24 hours.
There are many things you
discover when you have no TV, internet or phone. One, it is extremely quiet;
two, you are grateful to have a DVD player; and three, we are fortunate to have
cell phones.
Of course after an hour of no
service we called and got the pre-recorded “we are experiencing a service interruption
in your area and are working to resolve it as soon as possible”. After another
half hour we decided to watch one of our many DVD’s. Still no service after
this so we went to bed.
When we got up this morning the
service was still out so I called again. A pre-recorded message was not going
to appease me at this point so I waited to speak to a representative. Can you
imagine having their job? For the most part you must have a difficult day all the
time – how can you have a good day when people are calling upset over their cable or
internet service? The representative lets me know that one of the fiber optic
lines went down and of course they are buried underground. It took them until
midnight to find the leak, and they have been working since to reconnect the
“thousands” of fiber optic wires. Obviously we are at their mercy and there is
nothing we can do.
Years ago all the lines were run
above ground and subject to going down in bad weather. When they stared putting
them underground we figured they were protected from the elements so no
problems would arise. Not only is this a false sense of security, but when
there is an issue it takes forever to find it.
It is a bit sad how much we are
tied to technology today. I’m sure that like me, many have a love-hate
relationship with it. I do know that in the hours we have had silence, it has
allowed my mind to rest which really is a good thing. It also is amazing how
much can be accomplished during these quiet times. Perhaps a loss in service
from time to time is not such a bad thing.
