Patience

Per the Oxford Dictionary:

Patience - Noun

  1. the capacity to accept or tolerate delay, trouble, or suffering without getting angry or upset:
    synonyms: forbearance - tolerance - restraint - self-restraint

Patience is the one thing that many people seem to be short on today. If they can't have what they want immediately then they lose control. Just take a look around you. Whether it is in sports, business, entertainment, the political arena, or even within our own circle of family and friends, we see a lack of self-restraint and an abundance of anger.

I have to believe that much of it comes from the immediate gratification that we get through our technology. Whatever we want to see or do can be achieved quickly via our smart phones, tablets or computers. There is no need to wait until the library opens to research in books for the information we need. Want to purchase something? Either you can do so online, or just take a trip to a store - many are open 24 hours now. No matter what it is that you want, there is a way to get it right away.

Growing up we did not have computers, smart phones, tablets, or other technology. Not knowing anything different, we didn't expect things to come easily or quickly. If we had a term paper due, we went to the library and used reference books. If we wanted something at the store - well, first we had to save money to get it, and then we waited until the stores were open (and it was only certain days and hours). We didn't seem to mind and we had a lot less stress in our life.

Obviously I enjoy the technology available to us today. However, I also believe it has led to our lack of patience with life in general. We can't accept it if there is a delay in having what we want at the moment we want it. We have no tolerance for anyone or anything that is not in agreement with us. And, we see anger rise up far too quickly in any of these circumstances.

Perhaps if people would take a step back and breathe, and learn how to have patience, then we would live in a more peaceful world. I'm sure that it would certainly lead to a less stressful life and more positive attitudes.
