Time With My Granddaughters

I am fortunate to have a lifestyle that allows me to spend time alone with my two beautiful granddaughters. The joy of hearing their stories (real or imaginary) and watching them embrace life is such a gift. As their grandmother I want them to know they will always have special time with me, and that they can count on me no matter what arises in their lives. Everyone should grow up having a special person they can turn to at any time.

My grandson, who is now almost 11, has been spending time with me since he was 2. He never has been afraid to come by himself. The girls would be spending their first time with us alone and I was not sure how things would go. I prayed for the best since it is a 2-1/2 hour ride to take them home.

In April my 5 year old granddaughter, Emily, spent a couple of days with us.  She was funny shooing her mother and brother out of the house so her time with Grammie could begin. Emily has a smile that lights up a room and she loves to talk. She's also a great little helper when it comes to making dinner. She spent her first afternoon playing in the sand making a castle and then watching movies. On her special day we went to lunch, ran a few errands and then got pedicures together. Nothing like being pampered once in a while. Unfortunately that night she started with a toothache so it was a bit of a rough evening. I'm sure if she felt better I would have had a tough time getting her to go home the next day. She has informed me she wants to stay longer when it is her turn again.

The beginning of May my youngest granddaughter, Natalie, who is 3-1/2 was to have her turn. She is a pistol (like her mother) and was very excited when I picked her up. She let me know that she wanted her nails done like her cousin, Emily. The weather was a bit nicer by then so I took her down the street to the beach where she played in the sand and I tried to keep her out of the water. The cold did not seem to bother her and she kept asking to go over to feel the lake. Natalie also had her day of lunch with Grammie and then a pedicure. In the evenings she had so much fun jumping on her Nanu like he was a trampoline. She made sure that he could not sit in peace and quiet to watch the news. At bedtime she did get a little weepy for her mother, but finally went to sleep. Two nights were enough for her first time and she was happy to see her mother.

There is a reason we have our children when we are young as I am reminded whenever they visit. They are busy and rambunctious, and the older I get the harder it is to keep up. My mind is more than willing, but my body does not always want to cooperate. I do push on and keep up the best I can, as I know that my time to rest will come all too soon. I enjoy the quiet when they first leave, but I also miss them immediately. Spending time together, watching their joy and wonder over the smallest things, and listening to their laughter fills my heart with warmth and love.

I am truly blessed to have grandchildren who want to spend time with us. We know how quickly the years pass, and the day will come when they are busy with friends and will not have time in their life to stay. For now I will cherish this precious gift that they give me and keep the memories for when they are grown.
