Time Brings Great Joy and Is More Precious Than Gold

The holiday season is upon us, and one thing that is certain, is that we will have a million things on our plate. The holiday shopping and planning gatherings with family and friends can take over the season leaving us worn out. This year, we have come to realize that even though the holiday parties are fun, we need to slow down a bit and really enjoy the season.

As with other years, we are asked by family members "what would you like for Christmas?" The truth is, there is really nothing that we need or want in terms of material gifts. When you reach a certain age, you find you want less and not more. This year, we are telling our children that what we want is time with them. Not only during the holiday season, but throughout the year. Time is something that cannot be replaced with things and is something that we remember for a lifetime.

Spending time with dear friends is also important. If time allows make a date for dinner or just a cup of coffee to catch up. Even if we cannot get together in person, we can take time to reach out with a phone call. Everyone is busy this time of year, but that one phone call may make a huge difference to a friend. We never know what they may be dealing with, and your call may be the thing that lifts their spirits.

Some of us may be able to give to one of the many charities that help those less fortunate. But, even if we do not have the financial means to do this, we can give a few minutes of our time to a stranger which may brighten their day this time of year. Say hello or tell them they have a nice smile. Hold a door open, help them if they have their arms filled with packages, or try to cheer a crying child for an overwhelmed mother. Better yet, if you do have the time, help out at a soup kitchen or homeless shelter. Any good deed will spread cheer and perhaps even encourage others to do the same.

Time together is good for us. It brings us joy and laughter and creates many new memories that remain with us even after we have parted. It gives our children a sense of family and security and teaches them what truly matters. It leaves us feeling loved.

Time together is better than any material gift. It brings us closer together, gives us joy, and creates precious memories to keep with us. Time is more precious than gold.
