We Have to Start Somewhere

We all have our list of things to do, the special projects that we will do someday. Unfortunately, someday never seems to come around.

Even with the best of intentions, daily life seems to get in the way of our attempt to tackle a chore that has been hanging over our heads. The kitchen cupboards that need cleaning, closets that are overflowing with long forgotten items, pictures that need sorting, and the list goes on and on.

When overwhelmed with so many extra projects, it is easier to let them float into a vast neverland. Once they get lost in our foggy deep seeded memory bank, we can forget they exist for a while. As the old expression goes, out of sight, out of mind.

Eventually, some projects spill out and smack us in the face. We open a closet to look for something and all the things we have shoved in there prevent us from finding what we need. This is the point where we can no longer ignore that particular project and must deal with it head on.

Once we let go of our daily ritual and jump into the disorganization in front of us, bit by bit progress is made. With each step forward a weight is lifted as we discard what never should have been saved, and the giveaway pile grows to leave room for what is kept. It is always surprising how many things we have saved because we might want it someday, knowing deep down that it will never be used.

When all is finished it is surprising how quickly the job has been completed, and we wonder why we waited so long to begin. Although there are many more tasks on our long list of projects, we have at least checked one off of the list, leaving us with a feeling of accomplishment.

A good reminder that we have to start somewhere.
