Coffee and Dessert - Apfelkuchen (German Apple Cake)
This traditional Apfelkuchen is one of Germany's favorite sweet treats, and a great dessert to impress family and friends for special occasions. It is light and not overly sweet, and delicious dusted with confectioners' sugar and topped with whipped cream. For a taste of Germany, follow this easy recipe and then make a pot of coffee and enjoy warm from the oven.
Apfelkuchen
5 medium apples, peeled and quartered
1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
3/4 cup sugar
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
1/2 cup milk
1-3/4 cups flour
1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
Garnish: Confectioners' Sugar; Whipped Cream
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease bottom and sides of a 10-inch springform pan.
- Slice apples thinly without cutting all the way through.
- In a medium bowl, cream together butter and sugar. Beat in eggs, lemon juice, almond extract and milk.
- In another bowl, combine flour, baking powder and salt. Stir flour mixture into egg mixture; spread into prepared pan.
- Arrange apples on top; they will open as they bake.
- Bake 50-55 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
Serve warm dusted with confectioners' sugar and whipped cream.
