The Faith Box
Each one of us have burdens we carry with us every day. Most people shoulder them well, and live their daily life so that others would never suspect what they might be burdened with. Regardless of what we carry with us, we all do the best we can to persevere and push through to better days.
Often we spend too much time and energy worrying about things that we have no control over. This excessive worry is not only detrimental to our physical and mental well-being, but also has an impact on our family and friends. This internal struggle leaves us wondering what we can do to let go of some of our burdens.
Having a good sense of humor can help. If we can find one thing in our day to laugh at, our troubles may not seem as heavy a burden. As they saying goes, “laughter is the best medicine”.
Many years ago when I was sharing some of my worries with a friend, she told me that she had a faith box. This faith box helped to carry her burdens so she could let go of them. Of course I asked her to share her secret. Whenever she had a problem or worry about her life, or the lives of her family and friends, she wrote it down on a piece of paper and placed it in her faith box and closed the cover. Once she did this, in a short time she never thought about the problem again. The next time she went to put a new worry in, she found that many of her old worries were now resolved.
All of this seemed a bit too simple to truly work, but I figured I had nothing to lose. One day I sat down with some small pieces of paper, and on each one I wrote down who, or what, I was worried about. I then placed them in a small wooden box and closed the lid. I did not go back to the box for several months, but one day decided there was something new to add. When I opened up the box and reviewed the slips of paper it held, I realized that many were no longer needed. The truth is, I also realized that I had not thought about most of them at all over the last several months.
You may believe that with the normal passing of time many things resolve themselves, or that it is just the power of suggestion that makes us leave the worries in the box. However, if you have any faith at all then you will accept that the box held all your worries until they were rectified.
So, find a box with a cover, write down your worries, and then close the lid and walk away. Someday down the road revisit the worries you placed there and see how many you can throw away. I think you will find that many of them have not crossed your mind in a very long time.
It may not stop all of our worrying, but I know that my faith box will always remain a part of my life to help carry the burdens.
