A Very Good Day
Today is my mother’s birthday and I feel extremely fortunate to still have her in my life. So many of my friends lost their mothers many years ago, and I know that they would give anything to spend one more day with them.
Yesterday we went to spend a little time with my mother and to help her with a couple of things around the house. Considering the times we have been living in these past several months, it is not as carefree and easy a visit as in the past. Most of the time we wear masks to protect her and it seems so sterile and impersonal, but better to be safe than sorry. Who would have ever imagined we would be experiencing this?
We brought a birthday lunch for her and enjoyed it while we sat far enough apart to converse without the masks; almost makes it seem like a “normal” visit. It is so nice to catch up and talk about what we have been doing, and about things from the past. Sharing a few laughs is so good for us all with the limited amount of time we have been able to see one another. We even had a lemon layer cake for her.
In a perfect world we would have arranged for all her children and grandchildren to gather and celebrate on her birthday. What a wonderful time it would have been with everyone enjoying a cookout, catching up and watching children run around the yard playing. I’m sure that I am being optimistic to envision everyone being able to attend, but it is nice to think they could.
Like all families we are spread far and wide these days and are unable to gather all at once. I know that everyone would like to do so, but the routine of life prevents us from having the freedom to make it happen. As the years go by these gatherings become far more important, and hopefully when the world gets back to normal, we will be able to make it happen.
Until then I am grateful that we had the opportunity to spend time with my mother, even if it was for a short time.
Happy Birthday Mom!!
