Don't Give Up Yourself to Belong
Always be a first rate version of yourself, not a second rate version of someone else. ~ Judy Garland
The desire to belong, to be a part of a group, or one of the popular, famous and well-known is something we all feel at some point our life. After all, nobody wants to be ordinary.
This urge to belong starts early in life, and we struggle with it often as we grow from childhood, to teenagers and then adults. Do we do what we know is right and better for us, or do we give in to belong? It should be an easy choice, but it isn't.
There are many reasons, and things we are willing to do, in order to belong to the cool or popular group. We can justify each one if we spend enough time contemplating them.
As a society we need to do a better job of teaching children early in life that all they need to do is be themselves. If they can also accept others for who they are, and treat everyone with respect and kindness, then everyone wins. Each of us can benefit from what others have to offer.
The truth is, being ourselves should not be looked at as a bad thing. If we truly explore who we are and the amazing things that each one of us can do, we would not call ourselves ordinary.
If you want to belong, or be a part of something, choose to belong to the group that accepts everyone else for their unique talents and gifts.
