Taking Chances

"If it were all truly known and planned and determined, life wouldn't be worth living, just a giant to-do list waiting to be crossed off." ~ Helen Mirren

Fear of the unknown is probably the biggest reason we don't take chances. The second is usually financial given that we all need a certain amount of money to survive.

How many opportunities have been put before us, and how many have we taken over the years? I'm sure that most of us would say that we let many pass us by due to fear of taking that chance. Not knowing if it will make our life better, or worse, can leave us frozen and unable to move in a different direction than we have always gone.

I’m not referring to taking chances that could be detrimental to your well being or those you love. We all know that certain “opportunities” are not opportunities at all, but rather a bad choice put in front of us that would only benefit the party offering it.

Of course, we all can't be movie stars, musicians, writers, etc., but there are many things we can do if we choose to take the chance. The chances I’m talking about would be the real opportunities put before us that could change the trajectory of our life for the better. The job offer that is out of our comfort zone may lead to something we’ve always wanted to do. The spur of the moment trip where we might meet our perfect match. The decision to leave everyday work and chores behind to play with our children, creating a perfect day that everyone will remember.

There are so many times in our life that we zig instead of zag. The zig is the choice that keeps us on our current path; the zag is the alternative choice that would have led to a different outcome. The reward for taking the unfamiliar path might be well worth it.

I do believe that if a choice feels right and true to who you are, then you shouldn’t let the inner voices hold you back. Dive into the waters, take a leap of faith, and you may be surprised how well things turn out. It might be just the thing you were looking for to turn your life around.
