The Best Mother's Day Gift is Time
Whether you are receiving or giving, the greatest gift is that of time. There is nothing more precious than spending time with your mother or children. I have been fortunate in the past week to have time with my mother, and also my daughters and grandchildren.
Last weekend I went to visit my mom, and also to help her with some things that needed to be done. I must confess that I don't get up to see her as often as I would like. It felt great to help her with some things that are not as easy for her to do anymore. As I age I understand more and more how the body is not always willing even if the mind is. We were able to have lunch and spend time catching up which was truly a gift. It reminded me that not only is she my mother, but also my friend.
Today I had the pleasure of meeting my daughters and grandchildren for lunch. Unfortunately it is a rare occasion for all of us to be together. And everyone was in a good mood - all at once - go figure. Part of this is a bit of humor and part truth, as any mother can attest to. It was wonderful to sit and watch them all and take everything in. Each one with their own unique personality that touches my heart.
Observing my daughters I thought of the many things that they should know. The first is that I had hoped they would not inherit my family genes that push us to think we have to do everything perfectly. Unfortunately they did. They should know that there is no such thing as perfect. We all are imperfect humans who make mistakes and wrong decisions at times. I want them to know that it is okay to try something and fail. Nobody is great at everything they do - what matters is you tried. Find your strengths and go with them. Walk away from the housework and spend time playing with your children. The household chores will always be there, your children will grow up and move away. Find what you are passionate about and make it your work. If you do it won't feel like work. These are a few of the things I want them to know.
There is never enough time together with the busy lives that everyone leads. Days, months and years pass far too quickly, and I hope to slow down and take more time for these precious moments. The memories that are created are not only a gift for me, but also for my children and grandchildren to carry with them as they go through life. Time together is priceless.
