Learn or Repeat

Image
In view of current events around the world, I have recently been thinking of history lessons from high school. So much of what I see and hear today reminds me of what transpired prior to World War II. The events that led to this war, and the atrocities that took place, should have been enough to ensure they wouldn't happen again. Sadly, I fear that if we don't wake up and recognize the propaganda being spread by world leaders, we will be doomed to repeat them. I'm not sure what history classes include for today's youth, but I question whether the true depth and damage caused by world wars is clearly laid before them. Have we become so concerned about frightening them that we have homogenized the past? Even as adults we have a tendency perhaps not to forget the past, but to bury it deep in our memories. None of us care to dwell on unpleasant events. However, every now and then something is put before me not only to remind me, but to teach me about another piece of histor...

Go With the Flow

Image
Life will bring changes every day, some uplift us and others disappoint. Ebbing and flowing like the waves, We try to ride this uncertain life. There are those who are chirping in our ear, preaching think positive and all will be great. They have good intentions to spread the word, but not truly knowing what others endure. Trying hard to put on a good front, ensuring others do not know the struggle. Smiling and laughing, or nodding in silence, pushing so hard to reach a good place. Do not despair and dwell in the depths, of gloominess, heartache, and woe. For rising again can be an arduous task, taking more strength than one might have. Sometimes the best that anyone can do, is go with the flow to see where it goes. Uphill or down one will eventually arrive, at the valley of new beginnings to start again. At times with a bit of peace and solitude, the soul finds comfort in everyday life. The circle can then become complete, from sadness or sorrow to acceptance and bliss.

Simply Sides - Asparagus Tart

Image
With fresh asparagus readily available it is always great to find a new way to prepare it. From Amanda Riva of The Hot Plate, this tart can be served as an appetizer, as part of a brunch buffet, or even a light meal. However, it also makes a great side dish for your nightly meal. It takes very little time to prepare for the oven, and it's absolutely delicious!! It calls for crumbled goat cheese, but I used a mixture of goat cheese and feta for an extra little kick of flavor. We both loved it, so I will be sure to share with my next dinner guests. Asparagus Tart Serves 6 1 pound asparagus, trimmed 1 sheet puff pastry 1 cup half and half 2 eggs 1 Tablespoon Dijon mustard 1 clove garlic, minced 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 2 ounces goat cheese crumbled 1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Plunge the asparagus into a pot of rapidly boiling, salted water for 1 minute. Immediately drain and plunge into ice water; drain and dry well. ( I used very thin asparagus spears, so I didn...

Cherishing Some Peace

Image
Morning arrives with hope in my heart, for moments of silence and peace. The sun peeks through the curtains, giving a hint of the new day ahead. For a time there is silence, as I remain still not making a sound. If I don't break this precious gift, perhaps it will stay for a while. The only welcome sound with light, is the singing of birds as they awaken. Every now and then a Loon chimes in, serenading me with a haunting sound. Once I stir and leave my refuge, the spell is broken once again. The daily routine begins once more, like a buzzing in my head. All around me sounds enter my ears, with no way to block the commotion. I wonder how others can easily accept, the chaos of what it brings. This busy day will come to an end, and the noise will eventually subside. Once again, I will escape to my refuge, for a welcome night of silence and peace.
