A Break, a Burst of Energy, and a Renewed Perspective

This has been an extremely hot summer here in New England. We usually have the hazy, humid, and hot (90+) days off and on; however, this summer these days have extended over weeks. Many mornings it has felt like we were living in the south.

This past weekend we finally got a break with lower temps and dryer air. It has been so nice being able to turn off the air conditioner and open windows; once again breathing clean cool air into our lungs.

It’s far too early for fall to begin, but this break is reinvigorating. The physical effect is a much higher energy level, which in turn creates a positive mental and emotional response. Some of those tasks that have been cast aside now seem possible to tackle.

There is something about fall weather that makes us want to clean and reorganize. It’s a time to discard all those things that we think should be stored because we “just might need them” someday. What we find out is that the same old things are still there the next time we go to clean. It's obvious that they are not needed now, or even later. All of this stuff is just a burden that weighs us down until we set ourselves free of it.

In a few short weeks it will be Labor Day, and then fall will arrive soon after that. The Labor Day holiday always reminds me two different times of year. First and foremost, it’s the last vestiges of summer with boat rides on the lake, cookouts with family and friends, and one last trip to the ocean to enjoy sand and crashing waves. The other side of Labor Day brings images of fresh picked apples, hay bales in the fields, the aroma of apple pies cooling on the shelf, and snuggling in warm sweaters around a fire at night.

Fall is my favorite time of year, but I am not ready for it to begin just yet. I will enjoy this small respite from the heat and humidity and then embrace the last several weeks of summer before it is just a memory. Time passes far too quickly on its own so there is no need for us to rush it along.

Enjoy the break, renew your soul, and then welcome what remains of summer to make memories with those you love.
