The Nature of the Beast

Sometimes it appears that we are never happy with what we have or the way things are. If it is cold we want hot, if it is dry we need rain, if it is raining we want sun, etc., etc. We always want the opposite of what we have, or feel that we do not have enough. Just the nature of the beast or so it seems.

I'm not sure why people are not content with their life as it is. Perhaps it comes from the never ending desire to do and have more than those that came before us. Or maybe the constant onslaught of commercials telling us all the latest and greatest things we just need to have to make our life complete. Whatever the reasons are, we are short changing ourselves from living in the moment and truly enjoying the life we have.

If we slow down and take in our surroundings then the realization may come that we truly do not need more. More things will not make us happy and they won't necessarily improve our life. If we look at the things we have acquired over the years we will find most of them we no longer use, can't find or have been given away. We would be astounded if we knew the volume of things people have buried away in closets and storage units never to be taken out again.

If we slow down we would realize that the weather we experience that day is exactly as it should be, even if it is not what we want. As much as we need the sunshine, we also need the rain, snow and wind. They are all key elements that sustain the earth. Each one serves a purpose and has its own beauty if we take the time to really look at it.

Even though it is the nature of the beast to always want something different or more, it does not mean that we cannot break the cycle in our own lives. If we stop and take a deep breath and open our eyes to what is right in front of us, we may just see things in a new way. If we do this then we can teach our children to do the same and to appreciate every day for its own uniqueness.

Just because it is the nature of the beast does not mean we have to fall into its trap.
